MTTC Exam Registration

There are certain steps that must be taken before you register for a MTTC exam. You must receive approval from an education preparation program to take the test. You also must do one of the following:

  • Receive a teaching certificate from an approved licensing authority, either in state or out of state; or
  • Earn a bachelor's degree or higher from an approved program in a field relating to grade 8-12 education and obtain a temporary teaching certificate from the State Board of Education (SBEC).

If you have approval for the test from either the SBEC or an education preparation program, you will need to create an educator profile on the SBEC website, after which you will receive a MTCC ID number that you'll need in order to register for the exam. Registration can then be conducted at the Educational Testing Services (ETS) website. Alternatively, you can mail ETS your registration materials or contact them by telephone.

During registration, you may be able to choose between taking the exam in a computerized version or a pencil-and-paper version, though this depends on which exams you plan to take. Most are only given in paper form. If you choose to take a computerized version of one of the tests where this option is available, you will be required to pay a $35 fee in addition to the registration fee. Other fees may also apply, depending on deadlines. For each test there is a normal registration deadline, a late registration deadline and an emergency registration deadline. After the normal deadline but before the late deadline, you'll need to pay an additional $30 fee. After the late deadline, an additional $70 fee will apply. No registrations will be accepted after the emergency registration deadline.
